HOW DOES THE GAME LIVE UP TO IT’S EXPLANATION/BOX ART? (6/10)
The Cover obviously tells me this is a baseball game. So, I don’t really have to guess as to what I will be playing. But, let’s flip it over and see what this one is about. Okay, the box is telling me everything that every baseball game pretty much has to offer, But this one does have batting/pitching choices, and a tournament mode. Sounds pretty cool.
I generally enjoy games by DATA EAST, and the pile of baseball games on this system is extremely high in numbers. So, let’s give ol’ Bo Jackson a shot.
It has the normal set up as the rest of the games honestly, and the things it says it has don’t really speak to a person that already knows how baseball is played. But, not being able to move in the batter’s box is annoying. And one major thing you may notice is, EVERY SINGLE BATTER LOOKS LIKE BO JACKSON! WHAT? Why?
HOW IS THE GAME PLAY? (5/10)
The game plays pretty well honestly. There are the usual poorly executed auto fielder choices that all the games make for you. This is in all the baseball games for NES so it’s not a downfall.
It has recognizable words said in the game. Which is far better than MUMMBLE MUMMBLE dDLKKKKREERRR!! from a lot of other games.
It has intermissions in the game that they spent some time on. Like the opening before the game, hitting a batter, and random other instances. (coach arguing with umpire)
The pitching is kind of okay. It doesn’t really listen to what you are asking it to do most the time, and the batting is poor at best. And generally if you want a good baseball game, Pitching and batting are the MOST important role in the game.
Bo should have known that.
HOW DOES THE GAME LIVE UP TO IT’S GENRE? (10/10)
There really isn’t a way to score it less than a ten in this section. It’s baseball, when you play it, it’s baseball. So, well done Bo Jackson baseball.
THE ‘GAME OVER’ ALL? (70%)
I’m sure everyone has their favorite baseball game on NES, that they would go to, far before another one. And Bo Jackson knows baseball enough to, probably not have helped DATA EAST at all. But, it’s a good gimmick to get people buying it.
I don’t favor this title simply because of the bad batting. I’m always comparing all baseball games to each other. Each one is a little different, or completely different. And Bo Jackson does have a lot of cool elements I wish the other ones had, but unfortunately.. the pitching and batting just aren’t good enough for my standards.
BO still got a D. So he didn’t fail, but still got a BAD rating.
